IPhone 5 journal: Torture testing the battery

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - Reviewer Rob Pegoraro put the new iPhone 5 at the tongue and keeping a running diary of his impressions. If you have any questions about the phone? Leave us a comment about what you'd like to see Rob to address in future updates.People talk about the battery life of the phone as if it were a single measurement, but it is better to speak of battery lives. Own estimates of Apple's iPhone 5 reflect that complexity, that such use cases as talk time (8 hours), standby time (225 hours), Internet use (8 hours on 3G or 4G LTE, 10 hours WiFi) and audio and video playback (40 and 10 hours, respectively). And just in case, Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) classifies all these figures with the magic exculpatory description "to".My own testing routine is a little simpler.IPhone 5 journal: Torture testing the battery - For a worst-case estimate given, I have Pandora (P) app set to Web radio playing non-stop and then turn the screen of the phone auto-lock option to display illuminated. For a best-case data point, I will leave the phone on a desk with the screen off, mobile broadband and active Bluetooth and WiFi enabled but not connected to anything; 24 hours later, I'll give her the battery status check. I'm not speaking because we increasingly using smartphones for things other than calling. With these statistics, the iPhone 5 is great - but not by a huge margin. In the Web-radio test, lasted 7 hours and 44 minutes, in the second, the screen battery meter read 85% after 24 hours idling away. Each figure beats any Android phone I've tested on an LTE signal, although some 3G models can do better.(Most of these devices yielded dismal results because they use separate circuits for 3G and LTE. The iPhone 5 and newer rivals such as HTC's One X Series and Samsung Galaxy S III use an efficient unified design.)

I'm used to that so many of these smaller devices to charge by noon on busy tech events. The iPhone 5 that pushes "where can I join?" moment in the night - an advance power users will be happy. I used mine at the conference of the Online News Association in San Francisco last weekend, which may not have been CES or SXSW, but I still had to spend an inordinate amount of time on my phone. And after 10 pm Saturday spent checking email, tweeting, reading on the web and search directions a few times, the iPhone 5 has a 32% charge by that evening. It took three hours to below 10%. This is seriously good.IPhone 5 journal: Torture testing the battery But on Sunday, three hours online, five hours airplane mode on the flight back to DC and a few quick "tethering" sessions parts of the iPhone 5's LTE with my laptop battery combined to drive down to 52 percent. As much as the iPhone 5 progress smartphone battery life, in one aspect, it matches only competitors: You would still be wise to choose a cable and a charger with you if you are going to spend a long day with this thing.
